In Windows, I can open multiple instances of Xamarin Studio at once. But, on OS-X Mountain Lion I seem to only be able to open one instance. Is there a way to open it more than once on a Mac? I want to be able to look at code in two different solutions side-by-side.

• Thanks for the quick response! I tried to launch a second instance using the terminal and got an error 10810. Here's a copy of my terminal session:

  Administrators-iMac-3:Applications birdb$ open -n 'Xamarin Studio.app'
  LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -10810 for the file /Applications/Xamarin Studio.app.

• Hmm.. I get the same error when I try to open the solution file:

  Administrators-iMac-3:L1CH4ListView birdb$ open -n L1CH4ListView.sln
  LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -10810 for the file /Users/birdb/Dropbox/lcc/cs235m/Tutorials/L1CH4ListView/L1CH4ListView.sln.

• Unfortunately error -'10810' is the Apple error that indicates an unknown error, so it doesn't help to figure out the problem

  FWIW, open -n '/Applications/Xamarin Studio.app' works for me. Can you open Xamarin Studio normally by double-clicking on it in Finder?

• Yes, I can double click on Xamarin Studio in the finder, and it opens. I tried exactly the same command you used in the terminal (just in case..) and it still doesn't work. FYI,I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Here's a copy of my terminal interaction:

• Are there any errors in the system log in Console.app when this -10810 error happens?

• Strange, can you launch the app directly by running /Applications/Xamarin Studio.app/Contents/MacOS/XamarinStudio in the terminal?

  Is there anything in the log (~/Library/Logs/XamarinStudio-4.0/Ide.log) after the failure to start?

  For what it's worth, I just started experiencing this error after installing the auto updates for the OS on my Mac. I wonder if something recently changed there.

• Thanks for this: coming from an XCode background, not having multiple projects (or solutions) open at the same time was driving me nuts.

  IMHO Xamarin should still add this capability inside the one instance, but at least I can now show two solutions on my two screens, which is very handy for trying to implement something in a similar way to what someone else has done (or to what you may have done previously).

  FWIW, I just encountered this with the latest update. Doing:

  fixes the problem, as does a full reboot.

  On El capitan 10.11.4, by terminal, without superuser rights (sudo not needed):
  open -n /Applications/Xamarin Studio.app
  It works fine.

• You don't need to open multiple instances of Xamarin Studio. You can open multiple solutions in the same instance.

  In Open menu when you choose a solution file a check box appears that says close current workspace. If you uncheck it keeps the original solution open. Now you have 2 solutions open.

  Then open the source files you want to see. If you want to see them side to side simply drag one on the source files to the left and split view opens and you can see them side to side.

  That said, I still prefer having entirely separate instances, so that my two (or more) projects are in entirely separate workspaces, and sometimes entirely separate screens.
